RULES 69th INTERNATIONAL CHORAL CONTEST HABANERAS AND POLYPHONY

TORREVIEJA (SPAIN)  

July 23 to 29, 2023

1.   OBJECT.

International choral song contest, in the participation of Habaneras and Polyphony.

2.   BUDGET CREDIT.

2.1. The maximum expenditure will be € 61,000.00 charged to the 2023 budget.
2.2. The expense will be charged to the budget application 334-48901 and 334-23300 of the 2023 Budget and is conditioned on the existence of adequate and sufficient credit at the time of the resolution of the concession.

3.   ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS.

3.1. The International Choral Contest Habaneras and Polyphony – Torrevieja (Spain), is open to national and international choirs. 

3.2. The “Organisers” (Patronato Municipal del Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonía) shall establish the number of choirs that are to perform each day and the total number of contestants.

3.3. All selected choirs will compete interchangeably in the modalities of habaneras and polyphony.

3.4. The competition will be developed in a single phase to be held between July 25 and 28, 2022, with the performance of the choirs on the date designated by the Board. On July 29, the Awards Ceremony Gala will be held.

4.   ABOUT COMPOSITIONS TO INTERPRET.

HABANERAS MODALITY:

4.1. It shall be obligatory to perform a compulsory work designated by the “Organisers”. They Will be on the web of the Habaneras (www.habaneras.org) , from the publication of these rules.

4.2. Within the modality of habanera, two works of free choice will also be performed with text in Spanish, which must be adapted to the musical form of the habanera: 2×4 time, approximately 60 black value, characteristic rhythm and binary structure. In order to avoid repetitions, four or more titles must be presented to the organization, in the order of preference.

4.3. All habaneras must be performed “a cappella”.

4.4. The “Organisers” is prepared to put its archive of habaneras to disposition of the choirs.

POLYPHONY MODALITY:

4.5. The polyphony works to be performed will be two of the free choice of the participants, one of which may be accompanied by instruments (provided by the participants), stating it in the score, excluding the piano and instruments that need electricity. Polyphonic works must be accompanied by the translation of the text in Spanish.

4.6. In this category (Polyphony), it will also be necessary to present four choral works of which two will be of  folkloric character or region of origin of the originating country.

4.7. The difficulty of works of free election will be taken into account.

4.8. The Musical Technical Commission will select the two free habaneras and the two free polyphonies that the choir will interpret in its participation in the contest, from among the four works that the choir presents in each modality at the time of its registration. The decision is final.

4.9. The duration of free program of every participant, including both sections (2 free habaneras and 2 polyphonic pieces), must not  exceed of 20 minutes.

4.10. The jury will assess the choir to interpret the repertorie of memory.

 

5.    ABOUT THE INSCRIPTIONS AND PERFORMANCES.

5.1. The registration period for the 69th International Choral Contest of Habaneras and Polyphony Torrevieja (Spain) closes on the 31th of December of 2022.

5.2. Interested groups will send the official registration form completed in all its sections and accompanied by the elements indicated in the Annex through the pre-registration form “on line” from our website www.habaneras.org.

5.3. The works of the participation program will be performed in the order as they appear in the official program. The presentation in the competition will be in the same evening of performance, divided into two parts, according to the modality.

5.4. The stage and sound checks are to be carried out in the afternoon on the day of the performance. This should take approximately 25 minutes for each participating choir.

 

6.  JURY.

6.1. The jury is made up of prestigious celebrities from the world of music. The “Organisers” will publish the names of the jury on the website of the Contest: www.habaneras.org.

6.2. The jury’s decision will be final. The jury is free to leave any category void and without awarding a prize if it considers that the minimum standards have not been reached, as well as it may be declared “ex aequo” (shared) a prize if two choirs tie in their qualification.

6.3. The jury shall individually evaluate each performance according to a points system. The choir are entitled to request a copy of their final score sheet from the “Organisers”.

6.4. Prizes of the Habanera category:

First prize (“Ricardo Lafuente”): 12.000 euros and a trophy.

Second prize (“Francisco Vallejos”): 5.000 euros and a trophy.

Third prize (“Francisco Grau”): 2.500 euros and a trophy.

 

6.5. Prizes of the Polyphony category:

First prize(“Juan Aparicio”): 10.000 euros and a trophy.

Second prize(“César Cánovas”): 4.000 euros and a trophy.

Third prize: 2.000 euros and a trophy.

6.6. “José Hódar Talavera” prize for the best conductor: trophy and direction of the joint singing of the obligatory habanera.

6.7. “The Public Award”: 2.000 euros and trophy. This prize will be awarded to the choir that obtains the highest number of public votes.

6.8. Prize Excma. Diputación Provincial de Alicante – endowed with 10,000.00. euros and trophy, that choir that achieves the highest global score in the sum of the computation of the habaneras and polyphony modalities.

 

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS.

a) Participation in the 69th INTERNATIONAL HABANERAS AND POLIFONÍA DE TORREVIEJA COMPETITION implies acceptance of its bases.

b) The Board will pay the amount of 300 Euros, in concept of mileage, to those choral groups, if the distance from their town of origin to Torrevieja is less than 100 km for not needing to spend the night in this town.

c) The Board will pay the amount of 1.80 Euros per kilometer traveled, as mileage, to those choral groups, if the distance from their town of origin to Torrevieja is between 100 and 200 km for not needing to spend the night in this town.

d) Accommodation and full board will be granted, on the day of their performance, only to the singing members of the participating groups, provided that the distance from their town of origin to Torrevieja is between 200 km and 500 km. will pay, as mileage, the amount of 1.20 Euros per kilometer traveled.

e) Two nights of accommodation and full board will be granted to the singing members of the participating choral groups, whose place of origin is between 500 and 1,000 km from Torrevieja, and they will also be paid, as mileage, the amount of 1, 20 Euros per kilometer traveled, according to the maximum distance of 1,000 km.

f) Two nights of accommodation and full board will be granted to the singing members of the choral groups from the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla and to the peninsular groups that are more than 1,000 km from the town of origin to Torrevieja. In addition, they will be paid, as mileage, the amount of 1.20 Euros per kilometer traveled, according to the maximum distance of 1,000 km.

g) From 2 to 8 days of accommodation and full board will be granted to the singing members of the choirs located outside of Spain. The Board will determine the days, depending on the distance from your country of origin to Torrevieja and the travel conditions.

h) If the Board decides to carry out a musical edition of the Contest, for its dissemination and promotion, the participating choirs will accept said edition and will not be able to make any claim in this regard.

i) The amount of the prizes will be paid to the winners, once the taxes and withholdings established in current legislation have been deducted, by bank transfer, so it will be essential to provide the third-party maintenance sheet.

j) The Board will resolve any question that may arise in the interpretation of these rules.

k) The accommodation of the choirs will take place in hotel establishments designated by the Board, in rooms with 3 and 4 beds. For rooms with 2 beds there may be an economic supplement at the request of the choir. The Board will accommodate a maximum of 40 members (including the director) per participating group. The excess of singers and their companions must pay directly to the hotel establishment for their lodging and meals.

l) The Board will be responsible for the transport costs by bus only from the Alicante or Murcia airports of those choirs that attend the Contest by air transport, regardless of the airport of arrival in Spain, and it will be done in a single journey through each coral

m) Failure to comply with these rules may lead to the exclusion of a group.

n) The patronage will request 3 performance dates from the registered choirs, to verify that they have the artistic level required by the technical commission.

DATES

31th of December of 2022: time limit of inscription and sending of documents (inscription, curriculum choir and conductor, audio / Video recording, scores of 4 free habaneras and 4 free polyphonies.

15 th of January of 2023: From this date the patronato eill tell the selection of participant choirs and free songs. In the period of 20 days from this comunication, choirs will must pay for the deposit of participation.

From 15 th to 21 th of April of 2023: confirmation of the order to interpretation of free songs, without admitting modifications after. They must be song in establised order in the oficial programme.

31 th of May of 2023: Any mmisprint on the sending scores must be comunicated before this date.
