The first Contest of Habaneras was celebrated from the 7th to the 14th of August in 1955, in the National category as starting of a cultural and musical sample that was serving to spread, between other singularities, the image of this city. Under this perspective, the initial objetive was not different any more than of cultivating and laying the foundations for a major progress and development of the local tourism, rested on the unsurpassable climate and on the particularities of the set of Torrevieja's beaches.

Nowadays there are two categories perfectly delimited in the development of the contest of Habaneras: the national aspect and, with the course of the time, the international one. This began in the decade of the 90, granting it the Department of Trade and Tourism, in its edition XL the declaration of "Tourist International Interest".
